Scott Alvarez - Mission Purpose Director
What’s your story?
I was born and raised in rural Nebraska (a Husker). I got a B.S. at Stanford and played baseball. I had a high-tech career before starting my own advertising production company. I moved to L.A. to pursue the movie industry and produced the movies Down for Life, based on a true story about a Latina who escapes the gang life, and Life at These Speeds, based on a novel about a grieving boy who becomes addicted to running. My wife and I founded Celebrate Recovery, which led to me joining the staff at CVCHURCH.
Family?
My wife Pennie enjoys beach trips with the kids, serving women in recovery, and hiking with friends. Our son Henry is a Sophomore at Crescenta Valley high school and is passionate about basketball, graphic design, rap music, and making his friends laugh. Our daughter Annamarie is a Frosh at CVHS who loves studying animation, drawing, and playing volleyball.
Sports or arts?
Both! I’ve coached youth basketball for 11 years at all levels from YMCA to AAU, and I love it. I currently coach for Rosemont Middle School. I follow Lakers basketball, Nebraska Cornhuskers football, and the ESPN PTI Podcast. I also love movies and dramatic TV series.
Favorite book?
I love nonfiction sports books like The Blind Side and Friday Night Lights. I'm also a big fan of Bruce Wilkerson: The Prayer of Jabez, The Dream Giver, and The God Pocket.
Favorite movie?
Just one? I love indie character dramas. My favorite last year was ROOM.
You secretly enjoy…?
Playing fantasy football--I'm working on my competitiveness. Cable series Halt and Catch Fire (nerds change the world!) and Mr. Robot (hackers vs. evil corporations!).
